Primary Resources

Primary sources are original records created at the time historical events occurred or well after events in the form of memoirs and oral histories.  A good guide to gain a better understanding may be found at the Mississippi College Primary Sources Guide.

  • LIFE Photo Archive
    Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google.

  • AP Historical Photos
    Film and video archive of the Associated Press (AP).

  • DPLA Digital Public Library of America
    Includes photographs, books, maps, news footage, oral histories, personal letters, museum objects, artwork, government documents, and more.

  • Library of Congress Digital Collections
    A gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States.

  • Misssissippi Digital Library
    The cooperative digital library program for the state. Its ultimate aim is to provide access to primary source materials covering a wide range of subject areas from Mississippi museums, archives, libraries, and historical societies.

  • Mississippi WPA County Files
    These files have been digitized and are searchable PDFs. The information details the history of each Mississippi county and was compiled by field workers in the 1930s. Each county is searchable.
